Main Applications
Polyester Synthesis (accounting for over 80% of global consumption):
Polycondensed with terephthalic acid (PTA) to form polyethylene terephthalate (PET), used in the production of polyester fibers (in the textile industry), PET plastic bottles (in the packaging industry), and films (in the food packaging and electronics industries).
Antifreeze and Coolant:
Due to its low freezing point (approximately -48°C at 60% concentration) and high boiling point, it is a core component of antifreeze for automobiles, aircraft, and industrial equipment. Mixing with water adjusts the freezing point and also prevents metal corrosion (requiring the addition of corrosion inhibitors).
Solvents and Additives:
Used as a solvent in inks, dyes, and cosmetics, dissolving polar components.
Used in the synthesis of chemical intermediates such as plasticizers, surfactants, and explosives.
Other Applications:
Used in water-based hydraulic and brake fluids;
Used as a solvent or humectant in the pharmaceutical industry;
Used as a stationary phase in gas chromatography.
